Fake Message Seeks Passwords From Fidnet E-Mail Customers

Someone out there wants your fidnet.com account password. Don't give it to them!

Recently, someone began spamming usernames on the fidnet.com domain, "phishing" for passwords. The e-mail they sent asks the user to provide their e-mail address and their password in a reply to the e-mail. "If you have received one of these, just delete it," said Mike Gorzik, Fidelity Helpdesk supervisor. "It's not from us."

They may want your password to try to access your personal information. It's called phishing. The password can be used to get enough information by sifting through your old e-mails to make unauthorized charges on your credit cards or even steal your identity. More than likely, however, they want to use your account to generate more spam.

In an effort to obtain your password, the e-mail says your account will be deleted if you don't reply. Don't fall for it. The e-mail is a fake, Gorzik said.

One version of the fake e-mail claims that a "harmful virus" was detected on your account and that your address and password are needed to "clear up this virus." The fake e-mail is poorly worded and reads like it’s from someone who barely speaks English.

"It's an old scam that tries to scare the customer into giving out information," Gorzik said. "I get them sometimes from spammers pretending to be eBay or PayPal and asking me to update my account information. You should never reply to these type of e-mails."

Fidelity has a policy against asking for passwords via e-mail and will never send an e-mail asking for one. If you get one, you should just delete it without replying to it. If you did reply, you can contact the Helpdesk at 1-888-463-1924 to change your account password.
