Fidelity Donates to get Sullivan Acedemic Center Online
SULLIVAN, MISSOURI, August 20, 2014—With a helping hand from Fidelity Communications, students attending the Sullivan School District's new Academic Center on Clark Street will enjoy all the benefits of Internet-based education programs.
After 15 years in various school district classrooms, the Sullivan Academic Center, formerly the Alternative School, is now housed in the remodeled former Moody's Meat Market building at 202 N. Clark. The building was purchased by the district last spring. The Academic Center helps students with behavioral, academic or personal problems stay in school and earn a diploma.
"It's a second chance for kids that get off track for various reasons," said Academic Center Director Jason Harbour. "We try to get them back on track for graduation. Technology is essential for that success. They're working on computer-based programs to help facilitate their education. It's vital to what we're trying to do."
Fidelity agreed to split the $3,000 cost of running dedicated fiber optic cable to the new location, connecting it to the school's network in all of its buildings. Fidelity's construction crew buried the cable and did all the splicing work.
The building was remodeled into one large classroom with 21 computer stations. "They'll be accessing subjects online and studying everything from English to personal finance in a non-traditional school setting." Harbour said. He can run programs on his computer and project them onto a Whiteboard as a visual aid.
Harbour thanked Fidelity for its help in getting the Academic Center connected to the network. "We're thrilled with Fidelity and how supportive they are in everything the school does," he said. "They are great supporters of the Sullivan school system."
